How Do Elections Work in China? - China Law in One Minute

Chinese voters have the right to directly elect deputies to the people’s congress at the lowest level.

The people’s congress at a specific level shall elect deputies to the people’s congress at the next higher level. As the people’s congress at the highest level, the National People’s Congress (NPC) elects the President of the State.

The people’s congress at each level, in addition to electing deputies to the people’s congress at the next higher level, is empowered to elect the heads of the government at the corresponding level.

Citizens who have reached the age of 18 shall have the right to vote and the right to stand for election, except those who have been deprived of their political rights in accordance with law.
