Zhang Jun (張軍) is elected as China's Supreme People's Court president for a five-year term (2023 to 2028).
Prior to that, Zhang was the Procurator-General of China’s Supreme People’s Procuratorate (SPP) from 2018 to 2023.
Born in October 1956, Zhang is now 67 years old.
In 1985, Zhang joined the Supreme People’s Court (SPC) as a clerk after receiving a master’s degree in law from Renmin University of China. After several posts, he was promoted to Vice-President of the SPC at the end of 2001 at the age of 45.
In 2003, Zhang was transferred to the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) as Vice-Minister.
In August 2005, Zhang returned to the SPC and continued to serve as Vice-President.
In November 2012, Zhang became Deputy Secretary of the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection.
In February 2017, Zhang began his tenure as Minister of the MOJ but only served for a year.
On 18 Mar. 2018, Zhang was elected Procurator-General of the SPP and served until his election as president of the SPC.
Zhang has attracted much attention in China’s legal profession for his pro-people and creative characteristics.
For instance, he was the first Chief Prosecutor to give an interview and even answered questions in person on Zhihu, a Chinese question-and-answer social media site.
