SPP Reports First Quarter 2023 Results

In the first quarter of 2023, Chinese procuratorates received 182,000 applications for arrest and 369,000 cases for examination and prosecution.

On 27 Apr. 2023, China’s Supreme People’s Procuratorate (SPP) released to the public the case-handling data of procuratorates nationwide from January to March 2023.

In addition to the above, the following data are worth noting:

  • In criminal cases, more than 490 suspects were arrested and not prosecuted.
  • In criminal cases, more than 3,700 defendants were not given light sentences, suspended sentences or exempted from criminal punishment after their arrest, and more than 250 were found not guilty and exempted from criminal punishment.
  • In 48.5% of cases where the police authorities requested arrest, the procuratorates decided not to arrest.
  • In 28.3% of cases where the police authorities requested public prosecution, the procuratorates decided not to prosecute.
  • In cases involving intellectual property infringement, more than 2,800 people were prosecuted.
  • In cases of disrupting the order of financial administration, more than 4,000 people were prosecuted.

In addition, the SPP said that from March 2021 to March 2023, the procuratorates nationwide have handled a total of more than 5,900 cases of compliance non-prosecution.
