China Welcomes Three More Foreign Patent Agencies in 2023

In July 2023, the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) approved the establishment of three resident representative offices for foreign patent agencies, bringing the total to eight in the country.

The following are the three offices.

  • Bals & Vogel Guangzhou Representative Office (德國博格專利事務所廣州代表處)
  • LLR Beijing Representative Office (法國理利知識產權事務所北京代表處)
  • Pintas LCW Guangzhou Representative Office (馬來西亞賓大斯專利事務所廣州代表處)

As of 31 July 2023, CNIPA has approved the establishment of eight resident representative offices of foreign patent agencies in China.

The following are the other five approved for establishment in 2022.

  • Guangzhou Representative Office of French Levy Intellectual Property Company (法國利維知識產權公司廣州代表處)
  • Guangzhou Representative Office of French Novartis Technologies Ltd. (法國諾華技術股份有限公司廣州代表處)
  • Suzhou Representative Office of American Anova Patent Agency Ltd. (美國北維專利代理有限責任公司蘇州代表處)
  • Nanjing Representative Office of South Korea Tian Patent & Trademark Office (韓國田專利商標事務所南京代表處)
  • Nanjing Representative Office of Japan Cosmos International Patent and Trademark Office (日本秋櫻國際專利商標事務所南京代表處)

In 2024, a local Chinese court in Nanning, Guangxi, ruled to recognize and enforce a Thai monetary judgment. Apart from being the first case of enforcing Thai monetary judgments in China, it is also the first publicly reported case confirming a reciprocal relationship based on “presumptive reciprocity” (Guangxi Nanning China Travel Service Co., Ltd. v. Orient Thai Airlines Co., Ltd. (2023) Gui 71 Xie Wai Ren No. 1).

China Regulates Internet Unfair Competition

In May 2024, China’s State Administration for Market Regulation introduced the "Interim Provisions on Anti-Unfair Competition on the Internet," effective September 1, 2024, to address issues like fake reviews and data scraping, aiming to ensure fair competition and protect users and operators in the digital economy.
