China to Establish International Organization for Mediation With Its Preparatory Office in HK

The Preparatory Office of the International Organization for Mediation (IOMed) was established in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region on 16 Feb. 2023.

According to the “Joint Statement on the Future Establishment of the International Organization for Mediation” (關于建立國際調解院的聯合聲明) signed by China and various foreign states last year, the Preparatory Office of the IOMed was established in Hong Kong to carry out preparatory work for its establishment.

Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang (秦剛) stated that the IOMed will be the world’s first intergovernmental legal organization dedicated to resolving international disputes through mediation. It will transcend the limit of litigation and arbitration in which one side wins and the other loses, and it aims to achieve win-win cooperation between disputing parties, which is of high significance for promoting world peace, security and development as well as stability of the international order.
