A Look Into SPC’s Internship Program

Mon, 28 Nov 2022
Editor: C. J. Observer

On 15 Oct. 2022, China’s Supreme People’s Court (“SPC”) published an article on its website introducing its internship program.

From 2015 to 2022, more than 600 legal interns worked at the Beijing-based SPC successively, and nearly 1,000 legal interns worked in the Circuit Courts of the SPC.

To establish a mechanism to manage internship programs, the SPC has issued several policy documents, including the “Guiding Opinions on the Establishment of the Mutual Exchange Mechanism Between People’s Courts and Law Schools” (關(guān)于建立人民法院與法學(xué)院校雙向交流機制的指導(dǎo)意見) and the “Provisions on the Establishment of the Internship Program” (關(guān)于建立法律實習(xí)生制度的規(guī)定) (hereinafter referred to as the “Provisions”).

Chinese courts are required to receive law school students for internships regularly, which generally last from three to six months, according to the Provisions promulgated by the SPC in 2015.

As for the SPC, it publishes the announcement of receiving legal interns on its official website. It accepts two groups of legal interns each year who are recommended to the SPC by law schools, with six months practice period for each.
